When the holiday season rolls around, tasty food and overindulgence abound. Often we have traditional foods that we prepare year after year, but sometimes it can be good to try something new. Trying one new dish each year can help you incorporate healthier traditions to your feast that still taste amazing! Below is a cranberry sauce that I tried several years ago, and it was such a hit that I’ve been requested to make it every year since! What’s even better is that it is EASY and is much lower in sugar that the canned sauces you find in the grocery stores! Did you know that canned cranberry sauce has about 4 teaspoons of corn syrup per ¼ cup?!
Orange Cranberry Sauce
- 4 Gala apples, chopped
- 12 ounces fresh cranberries
- ¼ cup fresh orange juice
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
- 5 tablespoons brown sugar
Combine chopped apples and cranberries in a large bowl, then toss with brown sugar and orange zest.
Pour orange juice in the bottom of a slow cooker, then add apple/cranberry mixture.
Cook on low heat for 5-6 hours. Stir occasionally, using a spoon to break up the apples and cranberries as they soften.
Makes ~4 cups.
- For a smoother texture, peel the apples before chopping.
- While intended as a holiday cranberry sauce, this can also be served cold as a cranberry applesauce!
